What is the RTVue system?
RTVue is a Fourier domain OCT system that can non-invasively reflect the retinal tissue live with high speed acquisition and high resolution scanning.
The first OCT system developed at the beginning of the 90’s was Time domain, which was based on the mechanical scanning method to obtain an in-depth signal of the tissue. The scanning speed is limited to 400 A-scan per second with conventional time domain OCT due to the mechanical movement obstacle. RTVue uses a camera to obtain the A-scan signals simultaneously without mechanical movement. The scanning speed of RTVue is 26,000+ A-scan per second; in other words, it’s 65 times faster than the conventional OCT system. To increase the scanning ratio, eye-movement based OCT devices have been eliminated from most* scan designs (*3D scanners with nearly 52,000 A-scans take 2 seconds to obtain the data – in some cases, movement devices are required).
The RTVue system also uses a high broadband light source. The tissue resolution is 4-5 micrometres – double the resolution of a convention OCT system. With the improved speed and resolution, RTVue provides a much more reliable and detailed map of the nerves with much quicker measurements.
RTVue Scanner:
This is the main component of the RTVue system. It is used to view and scan the patient’s retina, receive the OCT signal and send it to the computer for processing. It also features a fixation light system so the patient can stare at a fixed point during the scanning and a position sensor to automatically detect whether the patient’s eyes are correctly aligned for the scan. The scanner and computer communicate via a USB cable. RTVue uses a medical power supply.
Computer:
The computer is used to monitor the scan during the patient exam. The programme provides data analysis, data presentation and storage and generates files. A relational database is included to organize all patient information and all the data and it features a search system.
System desk:
The system desk provides power to the scanner, computer and computer screen via a medical grade isolation transformer that prevents power loss from the AC source. The height of the desk can be adjusted to the patient’s height. The telescopic system that supplies power to the RTVue is medical grade.
