Cataract Unit
Cataract Unit
Cataracts are operated on in this unit using the most modern and reliable techniques with pre-operative studies that make it possible to determine the most appropriate lens for each situation, whether that be monofocal or progressive.
At the Institut Oftà lmic de Mallorca (Mallorca Ophthalmology Institute, IOM) the best specialised doctors have been using the latest surgical technology to perform this surgical procedure efficiently and safety since 1984.

Our objective is to remove cataracts safely and efficiently
Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the crystalline lens. Instead of being well-defined, images appear blurred and the more opaque the lens, the worse the person's vision will be.
Faco-emulsification is one of the surgical techniques that has evolved most in recent decades, and now the most reliable and precise available. It is also barely invasive, because no sutures are required.
Procedure
The crystalline lens is removed using the faco-emulsification technique and replaced with an artificial or intraocular lens, which also corrects existing sight defects, such as short and long sight.
This technique causes no pain either during or after the operation. It is a quick operation, taking around 20 minutes.
After surgery, patients should rest at home for 24 hours. The following day, patients' eyesight improves so much that the following day they can resume their activities.
We are the only centre on Mallorca which uses ZEISS intraocular lenses as a general rule.
ZEISS optics is the most prestigious home of the world. Is the manufacturer of the lenses of the best microscopes and the best cameras and optics used by NASA.
