Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit

The Paediatric Ophthalmology Unit where little ones will receive specialised treatment for childhood strabismus and amblyopia.

At IOM we have professionals who specialise in paediatric ophthalmology and optometry and are able to detect all kinds of infant eye problems using sophisticated technology.

The early years are essential to the development of perfect sight.

The purpose of visiting the ophthalmologist from six months of age is to prevent eye problems such as lazy eye or squints from developing.

The first refractive defects sometimes appear during infancy; short sight, long sight and astigmatism, leading cause poor eyesight which may interfere with academic performance. It has been estimated that between 15% and 30% of school failure is caused by eyesight problems.

Some behaviour in children may indicate they may have eye problems and need to see an ophthalmologist.

  • They get excessively close when reading or writing.
  •  They struggle to see faraway objects.
  • They often suffer from headaches.
  • Poor handwriting.
  • Red, watery eyes which they rub continuously.
  • Sensitivity to light.
