Cornea and Refractive Surgery Unit

The cornea and refractive surgery unit has HRT equipment to study closely examine each patient’s cornea, a corneal topographer and next generation Excimer and IntraLase lasers to perform refractive surgery and correct corneal problems which had no solution in the past. It is on this unit where we have been concentrating our efforts lately.

Most patients who are thinking about undergoing an operation for a refractive defect (short sight, astigmatism, long sight) so they no longer need glasses or contact lenses often have many questions about laser operations (LASIK-INTRALASIK)

LASIK Technique

There are two steps:

1st Step: a surgical scalpel inserted in a mechanical instrument is used to lift a very thin layer of corneal tissue (corneal flap)

2nd Step: an Excimer laser is used to change the curvature radius of the cornea.

IntraLASIK Technique

The difference is in the 1st step

There are two steps:

1st Step: No mechanical scalpel is used with this system to cut the corneal flap. It is done by using a laser known as IntraLase. IntraLase is a computer-assisted femtosecond laser that lifts the corneal tissue extremely accurately and safely.

2nd Step: an Excimer laser is used to change the curvature radius of the cornea.

The IntraLASIK system is even more safe, reliable and accurate than the LASIK technique.

Take a look at the following data:

Table 01- Complication Incidence (related to the flap:

Lasik Intralasik
Buttonhole flap 0,1 % 0 %
Parcial/incomplete Flap
0,1 % 0 %
Epithelial defect 5% 0,08 %
Flap epithelialisation 2% 0 %

The Institut Oftàlmic de Mallorca is currently the only centre on the Balearic Islands that uses the IntraLASIK system.
