What is it?

A degeneration of the deep conjunctival layers related to exposure to sunlight. Manifests itself as a red fold, vascularised which spreads from the conjunctiva to the cornea and may grow onto it. Generally on the nasal side although it may also be temporal. Must be distinguished from pinguecula: yellowish white lesion, flat or slightly elevated which does not affect the cornea

Symptoms

Red eyes, generally on the nasal side.

Treatment

Protect the eyes from sun and wind with sunglasses. Lubrication with artificial tears. In cases of inflammation: antiinflammatory eye drops and/or surgery.
